Last updated: June 2026
Learn to build a corporate greenhouse-gas inventory under the GHG Protocol: set organizational and operational boundaries, classify emissions into Scope 1, 2 and 3, apply the activity-data x emission-factor method, choose location- vs market-based Scope 2, and report a credible, verifiable carbon footprint. The course is organized into 7 modules, ending with a final exam (pass mark 80%). It is free awareness-level training designed for anyone who needs a practical, working understanding of the topic.
What you'll learn
- Why carbon accounting & the gases
- Organizational boundaries
- The three scopes
- Calculating emissions
- Scope 2: location vs market
- Scope 3: the 15 categories
- Principles, base year & reporting
Learning objectives
- Explain why organizations measure greenhouse gases and the seven Kyoto GHGs converted to CO2-equivalent (CO2e) using GWP
- Set the organizational boundary using the equity-share, financial-control or operational-control approach
- Set operational boundaries and correctly classify each emission source into Scope 1, Scope 2 or Scope 3
- Calculate emissions with the core method: activity data x emission factor, and convert to CO2e
- Distinguish location-based and market-based Scope 2 accounting and apply the dual-reporting requirement
- Identify and screen the 15 Scope 3 categories across upstream and downstream value-chain activities
- Apply the five GHG accounting principles, set a base year, and report a complete, verifiable inventory
