Learning objectives
- Define an environmental aspect and the environmental impact it causes, and explain the cause-effect link
- Identify aspects from activities, products and services using a lifecycle perspective across normal, abnormal and emergency conditions
- Recognise the main aspect categories: air emissions, water discharge, land/soil, waste, energy and natural resources
- Evaluate the significance of an aspect with a documented method (severity × likelihood × scale plus legal and stakeholder factors)
- Distinguish significant aspects and link them to objectives, operational controls (clause 8.1) and monitored indicators (clause 9.1)
- Determine compliance obligations under clause 6.1.3 — legal requirements plus voluntary commitments
- Maintain documented information: an aspects register, the significance criteria and the list of significant aspects (clause 6.1.2)
