The CCS (Certified Coding Specialist) is AHIMA's mastery-level credential for coders who assign diagnosis and procedure codes from full health records across both inpatient and outpatient settings. It signals that you can read a real chart — discharge summary, operative report, lab and pathology results — and translate it into accurate, compliant code sets that drive billing, statistics and quality reporting. This module is independent prep over the publicly published CCS Exam Content Outline and is not the official AHIMA exam or review product.

WHAT THE EXAM TESTS Two question types: multiple-choice items on coding knowledge, guidelines, reimbursement and compliance, plus medical-record (case) scenarios where you read an actual record and assign the full set of ICD-10-CM, ICD-10-PCS and/or CPT codes. The medical scenarios are where most candidates win or lose points.

The Content Outline organises competencies into domains — coding knowledge and skills, coding documentation, provider queries, regulatory guidelines, and data integrity/compliance. Coding knowledge and skills is by far the largest domain, so the bulk of your study should be hands-on code assignment, not memorising trivia.
